While 2011 may mark the tenth anniversary of the Springhurst residents being in charge of the Springhurst Community Association, Springhurst residents have always been involved in their community. Believe it or not, 1994 was the first year that Springhurst had a swim team.
The 1994 Springhurst Sharks Swim Team was put together by a small, but dedicated group of parents from Springbrooke, Moorfield and Felsmere – the only Springhurst neighborhoods in existence at the time. Thirty young summer swimmers from Springhurst participated in the Glenwood Parks swim league, and did not win a single meet.
As the neighborhood expanded so did the Swim Team. By 2002 Springhurst was over 100 swimmers strong and had joined the Louisville Swim Association - the most competitive summer swim league in Louisville. For its first three years in the LSA, Springhurst toiled in the lowest of three LSA divisions.
In 2004, however, the Springhurst Sharks Swim Team hired coaches Laura and Tommy. Under their guidance, and with the help of a dedicated group of assistant coaches and numerous parent volunteers, the Springhurst Sharks Swim Team blossomed. In 2004, Springhurst won its division of the LSA and was bumped up to the next division. In 2005, Springhurst again won its divisional championship and was bumped up to the highest division of the LSA, where Springhurst has competed through the 2014 season.
In 2010, over 160 Springhurst Sharks swimmers ages 4-18 had their most outstanding swim season ever. Overcoming numerous ice cream and pizza parties, Monday nights at Buffalo Wild Wings and Tuesday morning water polo, the Sharks finished undefeated in the regular season, including their first-ever wins over Douglass Hills and Plainview, and finished third at the Championship Meet. We may not always be the fastest in the pool, but the young kids, parents and coaches of the Springhurst Sharks always have the most fun!
